About George Vithoulkas

George VithoulkasGeorge Vithoulkas was born in Athens in 1932, his permanent residence is on the Island of Alonissos, Greece. He began studying homeopathy in South Africa in 1960 and then continued his studies in various homeopathic colleges in India. He has been teaching classical homeopathy since 1967.

George Vilthoulkas’s main contribution to medicine is restoration of Classical (Hahnemann) Homeopathy in Europe and the US. He provided a succinct interpretation of the works of S. Hahnemann (the founder of classical homeopathy) which enables students to appreciate the effects of classical homeopathy.

1967

Starts teaching classical homeopathy in Greece.

1976-present

Teaches classical homeopathy in Greece for doctors from all over the world.

1978-present

Lectures in the US at the Academy of Sciences in California, the Stanford Medical School and California Medical School at the Invitation of the Medical Students’ Association.

1980-1986

Main teaching job at Berkley (California) and Seattle (Washington) as well as at Esalen Institute in California, San Francisco, Portland (Oregon).

Teaches in London at the Complementary Medicine Association, in Holland and Belgium.

Organizes seminars on Alonissos for physicians from all over the world.

1982

Cooperation with WHO, traditional medicine department, and the World Health Forum. Articles in the World Forum journal.

1987-1991

In collaboration with Namur University (Belgium) developed the Vithoulkas expert system software (V.E.S.) which facilitates analysis of homeopathic cases.

1995

Founded the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy on the Island of Alonissos, Greece.

The Academy offers 4 year courses of training for physicians, medical students and health workers. Those who have completed the full course successfully are issued the Academy Diploma.

The contribution made by George Vithoulkas to the popularization of homeopathy at government and international levels

  • Support of homeopathy at the WHO by contributing articles to WHO publications.
  • Support of homeopathy at the European Parliament where he was invited by the European Community President Dr Hensch, the Health and Environment Minister Ken Collins and the European Complementary Medicine Committee in 1996. Three months later the European Parliament sent its directive on the support of homeopathic research to the European Community Governments.  
  • Support of homeopathy at the Council of Europe at a conference in Cyprus in May 1998,
  • Support of classical homeopathy at the Parliament of the Republic of Italy (October 2002) to secure official recognition of homeopathy and allow its teaching at medical universities in Italy.  
  • Awarded Gold Medal of the Hungarian Democratic Republic by the country’s President at the Hungarian Parliament, May 2002.
  • Awarded Gold Medal by the Indian Ministry of Health during a seminar attended by 2500 homeopathic experts.

GEORGE VITHOULKAS’S CONTRIBUTION TO HOMEOPATHY

Theoretical contribution to the principles of classical homeopathy.

  • The idea of the mental, emotional and physical levels, their interconnection and interdependence.  
  • The idea of the hierarchy of various functions at the mental and emotional levels.  
  • The idea of disease stages when treating chronic conditions.  
  • The idea of levels of disease and their categorization to determine whether they are curable or incurable, predict the quantities of drugs required for the cure, the potency of the homeopathic drug depending on the level of disease.
  • Provided explanation of the need for repeat prescription of drugs depending on various stages of the disease.
  • Demonstrated the role of the homeopathic drug in protective mechanisms and logically explained how the drug works.
  • Elaborates the idea of miasma.
  • Developed and formulates rules for treating acute conditions arising in the treatment of chronic diseases.
  • Demonstrated the possibility to predict the appearance of mental symptoms when treating chronic diseases.
  • Developed algorithms for the use of high and low potencies.

Contribution to Materia Medica

  • Proposed the idea of the drug essence, i.e. described the psychopathology of the main drugs.
  • Drawing on the immense experience of treatment and cure, enlarged data on many drugs in terms of mental and emotional pathology.
  • Provided for the first time a comparative materia medica of mental and emotional pictures of drugs.  
  • Is currently working on materia medica viva,  10 volumes completed.

Contribution to repertorization.

  • Introduced the idea of mobility in a case study.
  • Proposed a new principle of case analysis for the selection of drugs.
  • Developed the Vithoulkas expert system, a unique computer analysis system simulating his own analysis in accordance with the principles he uses in his daily practice to choose drugs.  
  • Provided a multitude of observations to add to the repertory.
  • Provided a valid description of common symptoms.
